TRANSCRIPT: Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (6-4-2025)
SCENE: After more than a month of not seeing Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in the Capitol’s basement — the route most senators use to get to votes — on Wednesday Ask a Pol’s Matt Laslo posted up by the Senate entrance on the first floor of the Capitol looking specifically for New York’s junior senator.
After an hour or so of waiting, Sen. Gillibrand enters the Capitol, but she’s on the phone.
Laslo gives Gillibrand space. The senator pulls the phone away from her mouth and whispers “You need me?”
Laslo smiles and heads over to her, accidentally turning his mic off in the commotion. So the mic is still booting up when Laslo asks Gillibrand our first question…
Matt Laslo: Do you know there’s a UAP/ UFO unit within the FBI?
Kristen Gillibrand: “Is it UAP still? Or is it — is it just UAPs or is it unmanned arial systems (UAS)?”
Laslo shrugs.

KG: “Oh interesting.”
ML: “And…”
KG: “But there’s support — wouldn’t they be in the…”
Gillibrand changes direction of her initial question.
KG: “I’m not really focused on them to help us with the drone problem.”
ML: “Yeah? And they, it’s interesting, because they — now you're having some House members over there wanting to replace AARO with this FBI UAP unit."
KG: “Oh my!”
ML: “Right?”
KG: “Alright, I gotta do something on that. I’m on it.”
Gillibrand starts heading towards the Senators Only dining room on the Capitol’s first floor, but Laslo slides in for one more topic…
KG: “Thank you for the heads up."
ML: “Do you umm — do you know that David Grusch has been hired by the House?”
KG: “By the House?”
ML: “He’s now working for Congressman Eric Burlison.”
KG: “Nice.”
ML: “Yeah?”
KG: “That’s good. I like him.”
ML: “You think that’s good?”
KG: “I do. I think he’s a smart man.”
ML: “Yeah?”
Gillibrand goes back on her phone call as she walks to the dining room.
ML: “Thank you ma’am.”
