Ask a Pol asks:

Curious your thoughts on what the White House is saying about the drones over New Jersey?

Key Kim:

“I’ve been meaning to reach on out to FAA, you know, like, what ‘research’ are they talking about? Like, cause they said, like, ‘it was approved by FAA for research and other things,’” Sen. Andy Kim exclusively tells Ask a Pol.

What the huh?

“Like, it made it sound like there was, like, some research project that they're — like, as far as I know, none of that exists,” Kim says.

Below find a rough transcript of Ask a Pol’s exclusive interview with Sen. Andy Kim (D-NJ), slightly edited for clarity.

TRANSCRIPT: Sen. Andy Kim

SCENE: In the inglorious basement of the US Capitol, Ask a Pol’s Matt Laslo waits in the wings until newly minted Sen. Andy Kim wraps an interview in the Capitol’s basement, at which time he proceeds to score this exclusive as he hops Kim’s elevator up to the Senate floor.

Matt Laslo: “Curious your thoughts on what the White House is saying about the drones over New Jersey?”

Andy Kim: “Yeah. You know, I thought — I’ve been meaning to reach on out to FAA, you know, like, what ‘research’ are they talking about? Like, cause they said, like, ‘it was approved by FAA for research and other things.’”

ML: “Yeah?”

AK: “I have no idea what that means.”

ML: “Yeah?”

AK: “Like, it made it sound like there was, like, some research project that they're…”

ML: “Yeah?”

AK: “…like, as far as I know, none of that exists.”

ML: “Yeah?”

AK: “I mean, like, there are, there are normal personal and commercial drones.”

ML: “Yeah?”

AK: “I don't discount that, maybe, you know — maybe, you know — some entity is using it that way, but it made it sound like it was some, like, I don't know, some project in particular, you know, so I just thought that was odd.”

ML: “And the Jersey delegation, when you guys had calls, you guys weren't given a simple, satisfactory answer like that?”

AK: “No. And that answer from yesterday was just not, I mean, it's not satisfactory to me, it just raises more concerns — in that kind of vein — and, you know, doesn't at all kind of address some of the concerns that even President Trump raised before.”

ML: “Yeah?”

ML: “And just in December, I believe, [Rep.] Chris Smith, in a public hearing with Homeland Security, raised that the Coast Guard — a member of the Coast Guard — told him that they saw a 13 to 30 foot objects flying over their 47-foot vessel out at sea off the Jersey coast.”

AK: “Yeah.”

ML: “And the Coast Guard had no idea what it was.”

AK: “Yeah.”

ML: “And still doesn’t.”

AK: “Yeah, and still doesn’t. I mean, again, some of those I talked to — like DHS and FBI — and they said they had gone back to the Coast Guard and tried to do some study and saw that some of those were potentially aircraft and other things. But, yeah, I mean, look, like, I don't see how the answer we heard is any different than what we've heard from the previous administration.”

ML: “Yeah?”

AK: “It's just a different administration. Does that create a different tone for people? I don't know.”

ML: “Yeah?”

AK: “But it, for me, it just raised more questions.”

ML: “Yeah?”

AK: “You know, I don't think there's anything, like personally at this point, I haven't seen and I don't believe there's necessarily anything alarming to worry about.”

ML: “Yeah?”

AK: “But I still just didn't find it to be a satisfactory answer. In fact, it just raised more questions.”

ML: “So this is not going away?”

AK: “Yeah.”

ML: “Thank you, sir.”
